The Captiva Erosion Prevention District (CEPD) is pleased to announce that we have successfully contracted a $400,000 grant with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to support the removal of Australian pine trees (Casuarina spp.) from Captiva Island.

Australian pines are an invasive species that pose significant challenges to Captiva’s coastal environment. These trees increase erosion rather than stabilizing dunes, are highly susceptible to storm damage, displace native vegetation, interfere with sea turtle nesting, and undermine the long-term success of beach renourishment efforts.

Program Highlights

  • Free removal for participating property owners
  • Stump grinding included
  • Removal will be performed by Joshua Tree Inc., a licensed and insured contractor
  • Full-service removal includes tree cutting, stump grinding, and debris handling

This program relies on voluntary property owner participation and will remain open through June 30, 2026, or until grant funds are fully allocated.

If you have Australian pine trees on your property and are interested in participating, or if you would like additional information about the program, please contact CEPD:

Thank you for your continued support of CEPD’s efforts to protect Captiva’s beaches, dunes, and natural coastal ecosystems.
